As part of my reflections on sensuality, one day I happened to see Patrick Weksteen\u2019s website (cf.my introduction article on sensuality and sensualism<\/a><\/strong>). He too was born in the north of France (and nearly has the same family name as my mother, with the exception of one letter): NudeVISION, La Photo Bien-Etre<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Intrigued by that concept (is nude photography really a source of wellbeing?), I decided to contact him to find out more about it.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Photographer since 1971, Patrick Weksteen began specializing in artistic nudes and the beauty of women in 1995. This was motivated by his ability to make his models feel comfortable, especially when naked. Perfectly at ease with what he\u2019s doing, he likes to photograph people whose work is not modeling. He developed the concept of \u00ab\u00a0PHOTO-THERAPIE\u00ae – ou le bien-\u00eatre par la photographie\u00a0\u00bb (registered trademark, as well as NudeVISION & BELLES inconNUES).<\/span><\/h6>\n
Patrick says that he discovered the \u2018phototherapy\u2019 effect thanks to digital technology, which makes it possible to share the images on the spot. It is indeed the spontaneous \u201cWow, this is me?\u201d reaction which made him realize how radiant his models were after the shooting sessions. He wants to enable these non-professional models to unveil themselves physically and mentally in front of the camera, as freely as possible, without clothes.<\/span><\/h6>\n
For him, a female\u2019s nudity is just a kind of portrait but he admits being challenged at times by the conservative mentality of some people. We have to remember that glamour and nude photography remain a transgressive, even unbearable act to religious extremists or against the moral of certain countries.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Aren\u2019t all women in the world on a quest for the same grail which is inner beauty, reflected by sensuality and femininity going beyond belonging to any particular ethnic group, religion or skin color?<\/span><\/h6>\n
And, if asked whether this search for femininity and sensuality through \u2018phototherapy\u2019 could be seen as an act of independence, freedom, or even a fantasy, Patrick Weksteen answers, \u201cThis search always aims to the appropriation of the self to confirm her female condition and whatever it bears of femininity and seduction.\u201d To support his statement, he refers to a debate he once had with a student who claimed that the women\u2019s behavior and attractiveness is related to early childhood, while Patrick Weksteen believed that it\u2019s innate and already in the genes.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Like my colleague, I create a style of photography related to the quest for absolute beauty and sensuality. Here in South-East Asia, I come across identical behaviors as those described by Patrick Weksteen regarding his models, that is, a feeling of wellbeing and self-confidence following a photo shooting session. On the other hand, I would tend to support his student\u2019s opinion. I have noticed that a model taking off all her clothes often originated from a need to distinguish herself from her culture, her religion or her close family and friends. It seems to confirm her femininity, her uniqueness, a way to say: \u201cI\u2019m a woman before being an Asian, a Muslim or my husband\u2019s wife\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/h6>\n
In fact, I believe that this drive for self-discovery is due to repressive girls\u2019 education or bad experiences during childhood.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Thus, one of my models once told me that she had accepted to pose nude to revenge men, especially her uncle who had raped her when she was 12 years old. (cf. my last article on normality<\/a>). Numerous scarifications to her wrists proved her pain and the morbid ideas that crossed her mind. She made it through owing to her basic survival instinct and domination towards those males that she hated. She transformed herself into a real sexy doll (she decided later on to undergo a breast surgery), forcing men to bow to her and controlling them with a single goal, vengeance and humiliation.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is not that uncommon. The photographer Ellen Fisher Turk could testify, as she discovered the therapeutic effects of photography on victims of sexual aggressions about thirty years ago. She went on with her study making portraits of incest victims, anorexics, etc. In an article, she explains that her initial idea was that posing nude could be comparable to confronting a phobia; if you\u2019re scared of flying, you go on an airplane.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Anyhow, in western countries, phototherapy is a serious medical topic that is not limited to nude photography. The Canadian website http:\/\/phototherapy-centre.com\/<\/span><\/a> lists, for example, the various psychological conditions that can be relieved by photography. On the British website http:\/\/phototherapy.org.uk\/<\/span><\/a>, I found out that the first experiments on medicine and photography dated back to the middle of the nineteenth century and were conducted by a psychiatrist named Hugh Diamond.<\/span><\/h6>\n
On my part, I recognize of course that not all youth experiences lead to this desire or urge to expose one\u2019s body because each of my models has her own life background and education according to her social class and religion.<\/span><\/h6>\n
I remember in fact, that another of my models once revealed that she posed naked to fill a fantasy. She wanted to see the reaction of a man she doesn\u2019t know in front of her body shape. That certainly implies the photographer\u2019s self-control as well as her own. And what to say about that other model who confided that she felt like a tomboy before posing naked in front of my camera?<\/span><\/h6>\n
Others have decided to pose nude to overcome their shyness, their lack of self-confidence, a hectic love relation, or, to keep a nice youth image, to stop feeling like a little girl or simply to open their eyes on their own self.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Feeling womanly and beautiful after a photo shooting session helps them accept who they are. Posing naked brings them to the next step: focus on the inside after having accepted the outside. For my models, the gain of self-confidence through the exploration of that inner beauty is definitely one of the main motivators. At first, this approach might be more intellectual than artistic but as we go along, the exploration of beauty through the mirror of the camera becomes almost exhilarating. The useful and the joyful join together to create psychological impact.<\/span><\/h6>\n
The above exercise of nudity helps in approaching the notion of sensuality with a pure and honest mindset. It enables the participants to see themselves in a more attractive and comfortable angle.<\/span><\/h6>\n
They feel freer (in many ways) and positive because this work on sensuality and on their body shapes has intensified their sense of femininity. For some of them, it\u2019s the start of a new life!<\/span><\/h6>\n
Briefly, the notion of phototherapy as exposed by Patrick Weeksteen is certainly a universal technique and it seems important that both models and photographers of the world exchange their points of view in order to increase our knowledge on the deep inner self.<\/span><\/h6>\n
Discussions about sensuality for a better understanding of that quest for beauty and why women (all?) need to tame their body and their body shape (is it only for seduction?) are of utmost importance to me. As expressed in a previous article on normality, I strongly believe in a \u201cSacred Feminine\u201d which leads to the Absolute Truth and Infinite Beauty!<\/span><\/h6>\n

Dans le cadre de mes r\u00e9flexions sur la sensualit\u00e9, je suis un jour tomb\u00e9 sur le site de Patrick Weksteen (cf. mon article d\u2019introduction sur la sensualit\u00e9 et le sensualisme<\/a>), originaire du Nord de la France \u00e9galement (et qui porte quasiment le m\u00eame nom de famille \u2013 \u00e0 une lettre pr\u00e8s \u2013 que ma m\u00e8re): NudeVISION, La Photo Bien-Etre<\/a>.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Intrigu\u00e9 par ce concept (la photographie de nu est-elle r\u00e9ellement une source de bien-\u00eatre?), je d\u00e9cidai de prendre contact avec mon confr\u00e8re afin d\u2019en savoir plus.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Photographe depuis 1971, Patrick Weksteen se sp\u00e9cialise dans le nu artistique et la beaut\u00e9 de la femme d\u00e8s 1995, m\u00fb par une certaine facilit\u00e9 \u00e0 mettre ses mod\u00e8les \u00e0 l’aise, notamment lorsqu\u2019elles sont en tenue d’Eve. Parfaitement \u00e0 l\u2019aise dans sa sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 qu\u2019est le Nu f\u00e9minin, il aime photographier les personnes dont poser n’est pas le m\u00e9tier. Il d\u00e9veloppe alors le concept de \u00ab\u00a0PHOTO-THERAPIE\u00ae – ou le bien-\u00eatre par la photographie\u00a0\u00bb (marque qu\u2019il a d\u00e9pos\u00e9e, tout comme NudeVISION & BELLES inconNUES).<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Patrick affirme qu\u2019il a d\u00e9couvert l\u2019effet de \u00ab\u00a0phototh\u00e9rapie\u00a0\u00bb avec le d\u00e9veloppement du num\u00e9rique, qui permet de partager imm\u00e9diatement des images captur\u00e9es. C\u2019est effectivement les \u00ab\u00a0Waouh, c\u2019est moi l\u00e0?\u00a0\u00bb spontan\u00e9s qui lui ont fait prendre conscience de l\u2019\u00e9panouissement de ses mod\u00e8les \u00e0 l\u2019issue de s\u00e9ances photos.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Avec elles – jamais professionnelles, il souhaite avant tout les amener \u00ab\u00a0\u00e0 se d\u00e9voiler face \u00e0 l’objectif aussi bien physiquement que mentalement et faire en sorte qu\u2019elles \u00e9voluent aussi librement que possible, peu ou pas v\u00eatues\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Le Nu f\u00e9minin ne repr\u00e9sente d\u2019ailleurs, pour lui, qu\u2019une branche de la famille du \u00ab\u00a0portrait\u00a0\u00bb, mais reconna\u00eet qu\u2019il peut parfois s\u2019apparenter \u00ab\u00a0\u00e0 un d\u00e9fi par rapport \u00e0 la mentalit\u00e9 conservatrice de certains\u00a0\u00bb, car \u00ab\u00a0la photo de charme et de nu reste encore et toujours transgressive, voire insupportable aux yeux de certains extr\u00e9mistes religieux ou au nom de la morale dans certains pays\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Toutes les femmes du monde ne sont-elles justement pas \u00e0 la recherche d’un seul et m\u00eame “graal” qu\u2019est la beaut\u00e9 int\u00e9rieure, qui se traduit par une sensualit\u00e9 et une f\u00e9minit\u00e9 qui d\u00e9passent le sentiment d’appartenance \u00e0 une ethnie, \u00e0 une religion ou \u00e0 une couleur de peau? \u00ab\u00a0Toutes les femmes n\u2019en \u00e9prouvent sans doute pas le besoin, et d\u2019autres n\u2019osent probablement pas, mais toutes les classes sociales sont par contre concern\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb, me r\u00e9pond alors Patrick. Il estime par ailleurs que \u00ab\u00a0certaines ethnies sont plus libres dans leur corps en fonction d\u2019une culture parfois moins r\u00e9pressive \u00e0 cet \u00e9gard que d\u2019autres\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Et, \u00e0 la question de savoir si la recherche de f\u00e9minit\u00e9 et de sensualit\u00e9 par le biais de la “phototh\u00e9rapie” est une affirmation d’ind\u00e9pendance et de libert\u00e9, voire la r\u00e9alisation d’un fantasme, Patrick Weksteen r\u00e9pond que \u00ab\u00a0cette recherche a toujours pour but une appropriation de son moi pour affirmer sa condition de femme dans ce qu’elle porte de f\u00e9minit\u00e9 et de s\u00e9duction.\u00a0\u00bb \u00a0Pour appuyer son affirmation, il rappelle une discussion anim\u00e9e qu\u2019il a eu avec une jeune \u00e9tudiante: elle de penser que le comportement des femmes et le sens de la s\u00e9duction est li\u00e9 \u00e0 la plus tendre enfance, et Patrick Weksteen d\u2019estimer que \u00ab\u00a0c’est inn\u00e9 et inscrit dans les g\u00e8nes\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Je pratique, comme mon confr\u00e8re, une photographie li\u00e9e \u00e0 la qu\u00eate de beaut\u00e9 et de sensualit\u00e9 absolues. Je retrouve, en Asie du sud-est, des comportements identiques \u00e0 ce que Patrick Weksteen d\u00e9crit chez ses mod\u00e8les, c’est-\u00e0-dire un sentiment de bien-\u00eatre, voire une meilleure confiance en soi apr\u00e8s une s\u00e9ance photo. Je penche pourtant pour l\u2019avis de son \u00e9tudiante, car j’ai personnellement remarqu\u00e9 qu’ici la mise \u00e0 “nu” avait souvent pour origine le souci de se d\u00e9marquer de sa culture, de sa religion, voire m\u00eame de ses proches, pour justement affirmer une f\u00e9minit\u00e9 propre, unique\u2026 histoire de dire: “je suis une femme avant d’\u00eatre une “Asiatique”, une “musulmane” ou “la femme de mon mari”\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Je pense en effet que cette volont\u00e9 de d\u00e9couverte de soi est li\u00e9 \u00e0 une \u00e9ducation, souvent r\u00e9pressive pour certaines filles, voire \u00e0 de mauvaises exp\u00e9riences au cours de leur enfance.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019une de mes mod\u00e8les m\u2019a un jour r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9 qu\u2019elle avait accept\u00e9 de poser nue pour se venger des hommes, et en particulier de son oncle qui l\u2019avait viol\u00e9e lorsqu\u2019elle n\u2019avait que 12 ans (cf. mon dernier article sur la normalit\u00e9<\/a>). Ses nombreuses scarifications aux poignets prouvaient sa douleur, et probablement ses envies morbides. Elle ne doit son salut qu\u2018\u00e0 son instinct basique de survie et de domination des ces hommes qu\u2019elle ex\u00e8cre. En se transformant en une v\u00e9ritable poup\u00e9e \u00ab\u00a0sexy\u00a0\u00bb (elle d\u00e9cida, plus tard, de proc\u00e9der \u00e0 une chirurgie plastique de sa poitrine), elle ne force pas seulement les hommes \u00e0 se prosterner devant elle, mais elle les contr\u00f4le \u00e9galement d\u2019autant mieux que le but ultime est\u00a0 – \u00f4 vengeance supr\u00eame – de les humilier.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Ce comportement n\u2019est pas malheureusement pas rare. La photographe Ellen Fisher Turk peut en t\u00e9moigner, elle qui d\u00e9couvrit les effets th\u00e9rapeutiques de la photographie en prenant pour mod\u00e8les des victimes de s\u00e9vices sexuels, il y a une trentaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es. Elle poursuivit\u00a0 cette \u00ab\u00a0\u00e9tude\u00a0\u00bb en tirant le portrait de victimes d\u2019incestes, d\u2019anorexie, etc. Dans un article<\/a>, elle explique que son id\u00e9e de d\u00e9part est de penser qu\u2019accepter de poser nu(e) est similaire \u00e0 la confrontation d\u2019une phobie: si on a peur de l\u2019avion, prenons l\u2019avion.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
La phototh\u00e9rapie est de toute fa\u00e7on un sujet m\u00e9dical pris au s\u00e9rieux en Occident, et ne se r\u00e9sume pas uniquement \u00e0 la photographie de nu. Le site canadien http:\/\/phototherapy-centre.com\/<\/a> r\u00e9pertorie par exemple les nombreux \u00e9tats psychologiques qui peuvent \u00eatre \u00ab\u00a0soulag\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb par la photographie. Sur le site britannique http:\/\/phototherapy.org.uk\/<\/a>, j\u2019apprends \u00e9galement que les premiers travaux liant la m\u00e9decine et la photographie furent conduits par le psychiatre Hugh Diamond au milieu du XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle. En France, le concept de la \u00ab\u00a0photographie-th\u00e9rapie\u00a0\u00bb (qui n\u2019implique pas forc\u00e9ment la photo de nu) semble vou\u00e9 au succ\u00e8s, si j\u2019en crois un article r\u00e9cent<\/a> paru dans le magazine Marie France.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
En ce qui me concerne, j\u2019admets \u00e9videmment que les exp\u00e9riences de jeunesse ne m\u00e8nent pas toujours \u00e0 ce \u00ab\u00a0d\u00e9sir\u00a0\u00bb (pulsion?) d\u2019exposer son corps, car chacune de mes mod\u00e8les a trac\u00e9 son propre chemin de vie, par le biais d\u2019une \u00e9ducation \u2013 forc\u00e9ment diff\u00e9rente selon la classe sociale et la religion – qui lui est propre.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Je me rappelle en effet qu\u2019une autre de mes mod\u00e8les m\u2019a \u00e9galement avou\u00e9 avoir pos\u00e9 nue pour assouvir un fantasme, celui de discerner la r\u00e9action d\u2019un homme qu\u2019elle ne conna\u00eet pas devant ses formes charnelles. Il faut certainement sous-entendre, ici, un fantasme de contr\u00f4le de soi, et de la part du photographe et de la part de la mod\u00e8le. Et que dire de cette autre jeune femme qui r\u00e9v\u00e8le qu\u2019elle se sentait \u00ab\u00a0gar\u00e7on-manqu\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb avant de poser nue pour la premi\u00e8re fois devant ma cam\u00e9ra?<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
D\u2019autres, encore, on pos\u00e9 nue pour tenter de surmonter leur timidit\u00e9, leur manque de confiance en soi, voire pour surmonter une relation amoureuse difficile, pour conserver une \u00ab\u00a0belle\u00a0\u00bb image de jeunesse, pour ne plus se sentir \u00ab\u00a0petite fille\u00a0\u00bb ou simplement pour leur \u00ab\u00a0ouvrir\u00a0\u00bb les yeux sur leur propre \u00ab\u00a0soi\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Se sentir \u00ab\u00a0femme\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0jolie\u00a0\u00bb apr\u00e8s un shoot photo les aide donc \u00e0 mieux s\u2019accepter. Poser nue leur permet finalement de s\u2019affranchir de la forme pour mieux focaliser sur le fond. Retrouver la confiance par l\u2019exploration de cette beaut\u00e9 int\u00e9rieure, impalpable par d\u2019autres biais que la mise \u00e0 nu et du corps et de la personnalit\u00e9, est ind\u00e9niablement l\u2019un des moteurs principaux de la d\u00e9marche de mes mod\u00e8les. Celle-ci est certes plus intellectuelle qu\u2019artistique, au premier abord, mais l\u2019exploration de la beaut\u00e9 via le miroir de l\u2019appareil photo devient presque \u00ab\u00a0jouissif\u00a0\u00bb au fur et \u00e0 mesure que la s\u00e9ance se prolonge. L\u2019utile et l\u2019agr\u00e9able se rejoignent donc, qui, souvent, d\u00e9clenchent un \u00ab\u00a0choc psychologique\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Cet exercice de la nudit\u00e9 permet en outre d\u2019appr\u00e9hender la notion de sensualit\u00e9 avec des sentiments plus purs et plus honn\u00eates. C\u2019est-\u00e0-dire qu\u2019il permet aux femmes qui s\u2019y soumettent de se regarder sous un autre angle, plus avantageux, voire plus confortable. Celles-ci se sentent alors plus \u00ab\u00a0lib\u00e9r\u00e9es\u00a0\u00bb (dans tous les sens du terme) et plus \u00ab\u00a0positives\u00a0\u00bb, parce que leur f\u00e9minit\u00e9 est exacerb\u00e9e par ce travail sur leur sensualit\u00e9 et leurs courbes. Pour certaines d\u2019entre elles, c\u2019est m\u00eame le d\u00e9but d\u2019une nouvelle vie!<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
Bref, la notion “phototh\u00e9rapie” que Patrick Weksteen a mise en exergue est d\u00e9finitivement une technique universelle, et l\u2019\u00e9change de points de vues, entre mod\u00e8les et photographes du monde entier me semble important, afin d\u2019am\u00e9liorer nos connaissances sur le \u00ab\u00a0soi profond\u00a0\u00bb.<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
D\u00e9battre de la sensualit\u00e9, mieux comprendre cette qu\u00eate de Beaut\u00e9, tenter d’expliquer les raisons pour lesquelles les femmes (toutes?) ont un besoin – parfois exacerb\u00e9 – d’apprivoiser leur corps et leurs formes (est-ce uniquement pour s\u00e9duire?) m\u2019int\u00e9resse au plus haut point, car, comme je l\u2019exprimai dans un pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent article sur la normalit\u00e9<\/a>, je crois en le \u00ab\u00a0F\u00e9minin Sacr\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, qui m\u00e8ne \u00e0 la V\u00e9rit\u00e9 Absolue, donc \u00e0 la Beaut\u00e9 Infinie!<\/span><\/em><\/h6>\n
